History

Unravelling Evolution: A Journey through Time

Sir Syed School and College of Special Education began its remarkable journey in 1955 as a Middle School dedicated to educating the Deaf and Dumb under the auspices of an NGO (Sir Syed Volunteers Association). Over the years, this institution evolved and transformed with the addition of new infrastructure, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to serving students with disabilities.

In 1975, the Punjab Government took over the administrative control of the school under the Nationalization Policy. During this period, the school administration made significant strides by upgrading it to a high school and renaming it Government Sir Syed High School for the Deaf.

In 1983, the school was declared an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Health, Social Welfare and Special Education. Its administrative control and management were handed over to the FGEI (C/G) Directorate under a Board of Governors (BoG) headed by the Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IGT&E). Moreover, the institution was renamed as Sir Syed Academy (Special Education).

In 1991, a momentous ceremony unfolded, marked by the presence of Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, Lady Diana. With grace and warmth, she inaugurated a stunning purpose-built campus building, a magnificent structure designed to foster the growth and development of young minds.

In 1994, the institution introduced a Diploma in Special Education, equivalent to the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC), marking another milestone in its mission.

In 1998, Lieutenant General Tahir Ali Qureshi, Chairman of the Board of Governors, inaugurated the newly constructed speech therapy rooms, providing a dedicated space for fostering communication and empowering individuals on their journey to speech recovery.

By 2003, it proudly expanded its academic offerings by launching Bachelor of Arts (BA) classes, furthering its commitment to higher education. In 2008, the first floor of the main building was constructed; thus, the institution became a centre of excellence for hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired students.

In 2015, the institution was declared as a subordinate office of the Ministry of Capital Administration and Development Division. The following years also witnessed a few administrative changes. In 2018, the institution was shifted to the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, and in 2019, its administrative control was handed over to the Ministry of Human Rights. However, in May 2021, the administrative control and management were transferred to FGEI (C/G) Directorate under the Ministry of Defence.

In 2022, an exciting new chapter in higher education was unveiled with the introduction of a Bachelor of Fine Arts Program.
